2019 Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering

This project was comprised of eleven Civil Engineering students who were led by two advisors. The team conducted field surveys and digital mapping to construct 3D models of the new Student Services Building by integrating various engineering and surveying equipment and softwares. In addition, the team created a BIM model from design plans of various elements including but not limited to civil, structural, architectural, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP).

NATHAN J. BARNETT

STUDENT

Nathan Barnett is a fifth year general option civil engineering student at Cal Poly Pomona. He is currently an intern at Mason West Inc. where he design seismic bracing layouts and make project cost estimates. He plans to take the F.E. exam and will work towards his P.E. license upon graduating. His main focus is structural engineering. This project was especially interesting to him because of the many potential future benefits of using BIM in structural engineering.

CHRISTIAN EMERETT

STUDENT

Christian is a Civil Engineering student with a geospatial option. He currently works at Saddleback Surveys INC. as a Crew Chief, Drone Pilot, and LiDAR Technician.  Christian processes and geo-references data prior to performing feature extractions to create surfaces and maps for clients. His time at Cal Poly Pomona has helped him further his career and expand his knowledge in new technology and different softwares. Moreover making him a more versatile asset for his company. This senior project has been a perfect opportunity for him to apply his current knowledge as well as learn new aspects of 3D modeling. Christian is looking forward to seeing his colleagues and himself thrive in the profession with all of the training in new technology that Cal Poly has provided.

DEMETRIO A. GONZALES

STUDENT

Demetrio Gonzales is a Civil engineering major with a focus on geospatial engineering. He hopes to one day see the fruits of his labor benefit this nation of ours. After graduation, he plans to work in the public sector so that he may directly work for his community. On his free time he likes to build scale models, edit videos, and draw.

ERIC HERMOSO

STUDENT

Eric Hermoso has a piercing hunger for challenges of all levels and complexities as well as the unavoidable failures that come with them. He spends his free time learning and building 3D visualization of objects and developing effective ways to solve computing problems in order to improve visualization methods using a camera phone and a combination of softwares. He enjoys reprogramming remote sensors that can help get data in the field and display the images location based on its latitude and longitude on a map. As data is being abundant, he sees himself mixing data to truly maximize the information it can provide. He sees himself manipulating the data that is obtained from the field, utilizing software such as ArcGis Pro or AutoCad to create schemes and diagrams in order to visualize the data.

SERGIO NAJERA

STUDENT

Sergio Najera is a 5th year Civil Engineering major with an emphasis in Geospatial at Cal Poly Pomona. Sergio currently works with Borchard Surveying & Mapping INC. as an intern where he practices field and office surveying. He was the 2017-2018 Cal Poly Pomona California Land Surveyors Association Secretary and is currently the 2018-2019 Vice President.

ANH T. NGUYEN

STUDENT

Anh Nguyen is a General Civil Engineering Major. She came to the U.S from Vietnam in 2006. Her interests are transportation, environmental and geospatial engineering. She is inspired and motivated in becoming an engineer, passing the EIT exam and getting the PE license. She is hoping to get an entry level job in one of her interest areas after graduation in the Spring of 2019. She learns by doing and confident in what she does.

MICHAEL D. ROSELL

STUDENT

Michael Rosell is a senior at Cal Poly Pomona pursuing his Civil Engineering degree with a Geospatial option. Michael is a 2nd generation Land Surveyor and has worked for his Father's Company, Rosell Surveying and Mapping Inc., since 2007. Michael recently started a new position at Truxaw and Associates as an entry design engineer. Michael’s goals are to become a duel licensed professional engineer and surveyor. With his significant field knowledge and AutoCad skills, he is ready to take on any challenge and is looking forward to his future.

Lee.jpg

LEE THAO

STUDENT

Lee Thao is a senior at Cal Poly Pomona studying Civil Engineering with a Geospatial Option. Although Lee did not grow up in a household of Engineers and Surveyors, she quickly found a passion in serving the public and being an integral part of a team. She has previously interned for the Sacramento County- Survey section and City of Santa Ana, PWA- Water Resources. During her internships, Lee has assisted with the mapping process and plan checking, as well as, creating tasks using the applications of ArcGIS. In addition, the geospatial courses offered at Cal Poly Pomona and this senior project has exposed her to developing surveying technology and softwares. Lee will be graduating in the Spring of 2019. She is looking forward to grow as an Engineer and contribute to the success of her team.

Ray.jpg

RAYMOND A. YZAGUIRRE

STUDENT

Raymond Yzaguirre is a highly motivated Civil Engineering student (general suboption) and will be graduating in Spring 2019. He has excelled in classes that pertained to structural engineering design and analysis, so that is my primary area of interest but I also enjoy land surveying and other geospatial practices. I love solving practical problems, critically thinking, and helping others. These characteristics are what define individuals as great engineers, so as a result I believe I will have a bright future in Civil Engineering. During my free time I enjoy hanging out with my nerdy friends, playing games, and engaging in in-depth discussions about life, love, and politics.
